BRIDGE THE GAP - INTRODUCTION TO PRACTICE
Dear New Attorney
As you are aware the Rhode Island Supreme Court has an educational requirement for admission - Rule 33. Rule 33 requires that each new attorney admitted to the Bar complete a training course approved by the Board of Bar Examiners. (This requirement applies to all attorneys admitted under Article II, Rule 1.) The training course is offered through the Rhode Island Bar Association. The course requirements, approved by the Board of Bar Examiners and the Rhode Island Supreme Court, are attached.
The two-part requirement begins with a one-day seminar, "Introduction to Practice." This seminar is free and will cover the disciplinary process, MCLE regulations, practical pointers for practice in Rhode Island courts and an introduction to the programs of the Rhode Island Bar Association. It is held twice a year - in January and June.
The second component of the educational requirement is attendance at four Practical Skills seminars. The Practical Skills seminars are designed for new attorneys who are practicing and have some basic experience. These courses may also be used toward your mandatory continuing legal education requirement. The average cost for new attorneys is $130 per session. The Practical Skills seminars are held each year from November to June. You will receive brochures from the Bar Association about the programs four-five weeks before the scheduled date.
If you have questions about Rule 33 please call Pamela Woodcock-Pfeiffer, Esq., Clerk of the Supreme Court at 401-222-4233. For more information about the CLE seminars you may call the CLE office at 401-421-5740.
