LAW RELATED EDUCATION
Law-related education or citizenship education teaches young people about their rights and
responsibilities, about the legal and political system and how they fit in, how law and
government affect them. It teaches about community participation and about civic values.
The Rhode Island Bar Association is dedicated to helping our Rhode Island teachers
in whatever way it can through training seminars, resource people, and classroom curriculum.
LRE is usually taught through an inter-disciplinary process. Seldom, is there a specific
course taught, but rather it is easily taught through other courses such as American
History, Government, World History, Civics, Speech, Debate, Language Arts, Economics,
Geography, Sociology, Psychology, Careers, etc. The list is endless. National research
projects have indicated that law-related education programs, when properly conducted,
reduce tendencies toward delinquent behavior and improve a range of attitudes to
responsible citizenship and resolving conflict. In addition, LRE moves students away from
being unable to manage conflict in other than a coercive or destructive manner by teaching
them to be socially responsible conflict managers.
Rhode Island citizens need meaningful education on the law and access to justice The Rhode
island Bar Association has undertaken the establishment of a Center for Legal Education and
Public Interest, the purpose is to provide law related education programming, training
initiatives and expansion and improvement of public service. Listed here is current
and accessible information basic information from a number of organizations offering Law
Related Education opportunities in RI. We invite you to look further.
