One Step Beyond the Basics - Equitable Distribution in Divorce |
|
Additional Information: |
This seminar will delve just beyond the basics of divorce law practice, focusing on asset valuation, tax ramifications, and ethical quandaries. Utilizing hypothetical situations, completely fictional, yet familiar, the panelists will present a lively and engaging discussion on topics such as:
How to assess the value of assets, when:
• clients can’t afford appraisals
• the asset is real estate with an upside-down mortgage
• one spouse is a sole proprietor of one or more small businesses
• assets are odd (heirloom toys or baseball card collections, tractors or airplanes, etc.)
How to divide marital debt, when:
• one spouse is a gambler
• one spouse is a shopaholic
• one spouse is a disabled veteran
How to avoid tax pitfalls, when:
• deciding which spouse takes the child tax credit and/or the dependency exemption and when
• clients owe back taxes (whose debt is it and why?)
• property taxes are overdue
Whether you are a new or experienced family law practitioner, you’re sure to gain useful practice tips and receive helpful checklists, forms, templates and case law updates to incorporate in to your practice.
