Limited Scope Representation Permitted Under Provisional Rules

05/23/2017 - According to an email sent to Bar members from Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul A. Suttell, the Supreme Court has issued an order provisionally amending Article V of the Rules of Professional Conduct to permit limited scope representation of clients.

The Court in June 2015 invited members of the Rhode Island Bar and other interested persons to submit written comments on the subject of limited scope representation in Rhode Island, recognizing that the practice may raise potential ethical and procedural concerns. The Court is grateful for the thoughtful and extensive commentary that it received from a number of parties on this topic.

The amendments are adopted on a provisional basis to encourage ongoing assessment and commentary from interested persons. The Court will review assessments no later than one year from now.

Please see this link for a complete copy of the order, a copy of the amended rules attached as Exhibit A, and forms applicable to these amended rules attached as Exhibit B. The rules are in effect until further notice.
